About the prototype (H&K MP5)
MP5 is an abbreviation of its German model name, Maschinenpistole 5. Development of the weapon began at the legendary Heckler & Koch factory in 1964 and it was ready for mass production in 1966. Over the decades, it has established itself, especially in official use, but it is also still one of the most reliable submachine guns in the military. The MP5 is in use by police and military organizations in 40 different countries.
There are about a hundred different sub-models of the MP5, and it has also been made in three different calibers, but today it is only produced in one, the 9x19mm Parabellum caliber. In addition to the various sub-models, the weapon has also been produced for the civilian market in single-shot versions. In addition to H&K's German factories, it has been manufactured under license in several countries.
The MP5N is a special version made for the US Navy, with the fire selector on both sides of the lower frame, the sights are slightly different, and the slide has also been modified according to the customer's wishes. In addition, the muzzle flash suppressor is designed to work with a specific suppressor, and the position of the pistol grip has been changed slightly. The MP5N practically also changed the appearance of other models, and today the same fire selector and the so-called pictogram selector symbols (pictures of bullets) have become established in other models as well.
In 1999, H&K released the MP5's successor, the UMP, but due to the reliability and great popularity of its "big brother", it has so far been unable to challenge, let alone completely replace, its predecessor.
