The M1911 and its later A1 model are the longest-serving pistols in the United States Armed Forces. The M1911 was introduced in 1911, as per its model number, and was officially replaced by the Beretta M9 pistol in 1986, but is still in use by some smaller units, mainly special forces, either as is or as a modernized model. The pistol and its variants are also very popular in the United States among civilians, both for self-defense and in competition.
The pistol was designed by John Browning and the short recoil mechanism he invented has, with the popularity of the M1911 pistol (and the Browning Hi-Power, among others), become the operating principle of almost all later pistols. The pistol also introduced a completely new cartridge, the .45 ACP, and as a rule, M1911 pistols have only been manufactured in that caliber.
The M1911A1 was developed in 1924, and improvements were made based on practical experience. These include improved ergonomics of the pistol grip, simplified grip plates, shortened trigger, widened sights, and most notably, an extension to the rear of the grip safety. The older M1911 model had a tendency to give a slight "push" to the shooter's hand when the hammer moved rearward, and the extension of the safety eliminated this problem.
