The two built-in microphones pick up ambient sounds and play them back to the user's ears, but when the volume exceeds a safe level, the system shuts off the microphones in 0.02 seconds. This effectively protects your hearing from, for example, the sound pressure of a gunshot. The hearing protectors are powered by two AAA batteries.
